Autobrush vs Colgate Hum: Which Electric Toothbrush Is Better in 2026?

Choosing the right electric toothbrush can feel overwhelming, especially with so many options on the market. Two popular contenders are Autobrush, known for its innovative U-shaped design, and Colgate Hum, a smart toothbrush with app connectivity. Both promise better oral hygiene, but they take very different approaches.

In this detailed comparison, we'll break down the key differences between Autobrush and Colgate Hum, covering design, cleaning effectiveness, features, and value. By the end, you'll know which one aligns with your brushing habits and lifestyle.

Design and Ease of Use

Autobrush features a unique U-shaped mouthpiece that you bite into, allowing all teeth to be brushed simultaneously. This design is especially popular among kids and adults who struggle with traditional brushing techniques. The brush head vibrates at high frequencies, and you simply move it gently across your teeth for about 20 seconds per session. It's a hands-free, fuss-free experience that reduces the risk of missing spots.

Colgate Hum, on the other hand, is a more familiar manual-style electric toothbrush with a slim handle and a standard brush head. It uses sonic vibrations to clean, and you still need to move the brush manually across each tooth. While it's easy to use, it requires more dexterity and time compared to Autobrush. For those with limited mobility or young children, the U-shaped design of Autobrush may be more accessible.

• Autobrush: U-shaped mouthpiece, 20-second full-mouth clean, ideal for kids and adults who want simplicity.
• Colgate Hum: Traditional handle, manual movement, requires 2 minutes of brushing.

Cleaning Effectiveness and Technology

Autobrush's U-shaped design ensures that all tooth surfaces—front, back, and chewing surfaces—are covered simultaneously. The brush uses soft silicone bristles that are gentle on gums but effective at removing plaque. Studies have shown that U-shaped brushes can be as effective as traditional ones when used correctly. Autobrush also offers different modes for sensitive teeth and whitening, making it versatile.

Colgate Hum boasts app-connected features that track your brushing habits, providing real-time feedback on coverage and pressure. It uses sonic technology with up to 30,000 strokes per minute, which is comparable to other premium brushes. The app gamifies brushing, which can encourage better habits, especially for kids. However, the app is an extra layer of complexity that not everyone wants.

• Autobrush: Simultaneous cleaning, multiple modes, silicone bristles.
• Colgate Hum: Smart app, pressure sensor, sonic vibrations.

Kids and Family Options

One area where Autobrush truly shines is its range of products for children. The ® Pro: Kids - Electric U-Shaped Toothbrush is designed specifically for little mouths, with fun colors and a smaller mouthpiece. There's also the ® Pro: Sibling Pack - U-Shaped Toothbrushes for 2 Kiddos, which is perfect for families with two children. These options make brushing fun and easy, even for the most reluctant brushers.

Colgate Hum also has a kids' version, but it still requires manual brushing technique, which can be challenging for young children. For families, Autobrush offers the ® Pro: Family Pack - U-Shaped Toothbrush for Kid & Adult, allowing parents and kids to share the same base with different brush heads. This convenience and the engaging U-shape design make Autobrush a favorite among parents.

• Autobrush: Dedicated kids' models, sibling pack, family pack.
• Colgate Hum: Kids' app, but manual brushing required.

Price and Value

When it comes to price, Autobrush typically costs more upfront, but the brush heads last longer (up to 3 months) and are often included in starter kits. The ® Pro - U-Shaped Electric Toothbrush + Foam Toothpaste bundle offers a complete package, including a special foam toothpaste that works optimally with the U-shaped brush. This can be a great value for those starting fresh.

Colgate Hum is generally more affordable, but you need to replace brush heads every 3 months, and the app requires a subscription for advanced features. Over time, the costs can add up. Additionally, Autobrush's foam toothpaste is SLS-free and comes in fluoride and non-fluoride options, which is a nice touch for health-conscious consumers. For families, the sibling or family packs can be more economical than buying individual brushes.

• Autobrush: Higher upfront cost, longer-lasting heads, bundle options.
• Colgate Hum: Lower initial cost, subscription for app, frequent head replacements.

Which One Should You Choose?

Ultimately, the choice between Autobrush and Colgate Hum depends on your needs. If you value simplicity, speed, and a fun brushing experience for kids, Autobrush is the clear winner. Its U-shaped design ensures a thorough clean in just 20 seconds, making it perfect for busy mornings or for children who resist brushing. The family and sibling packs are excellent for households with multiple kids.

If you prefer a traditional brushing feel and want detailed data on your habits, Colgate Hum might be more appealing. Its app provides insights that can help you improve your technique, but it requires more effort and time. For most families, the ease of use and comprehensive cleaning of Autobrush makes it the better choice for long-term oral health.

• Choose Autobrush if: you want quick, easy, and effective cleaning, especially for kids.
• Choose Colgate Hum if: you enjoy app-based tracking and prefer a manual-style brush.
